Sony Stands By Decision to Keep First-Party Games Off PS Plus
Sony’s vice president and global head of subscriptions, Nick Maguire, has emphasized that Sony is content with its strategy of not releasing first-party games on PS Plus. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Maguire stated that there are no plans to change their subscription service to match Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, which does offer all its first-party games to subscribers at no extra cost.
According to Maguire, the decision to release games later in their life cycle allows Sony to reach more customers, even 12, 18, or 24 months after their initial release. This approach has proven successful for Sony as customers still show excitement and interest in these games. However, Sony is open to investing in day-one releases for certain titles, as evidenced by their upcoming game Stray. Nevertheless, Sony’s overall strategy will continue to involve releasing first-party games outside the subscription service initially.
In case you missed it, Phil Spencer, the CEO of Xbox Game Studios, recently shared his thoughts on the possibility of an Xbox Series X successor. In an interview, Spencer stated that there is no urgency to release a new console at the moment, as the feedback they receive does not indicate a strong demand for it. According to Spencer, the current hardware meets their requirements and satisfies consumer needs.
Both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have been on the market for nearly three years since their initial launch in late 2020. In the previous console generation, Microsoft introduced the Xbox One X, a system revision aimed at delivering 4K resolution to consumers. The current flagship Xbox console, however, already provides 4K resolution capabilities upon purchase.
