Is YouTube Jumping into the Gaming Service?
Recent reports from the Wall Street Journal suggest that YouTube is exploring the possibility of launching its own gaming service. This move comes after the shutdown of Google Stadia, as Google seeks to tap into the lucrative playerauctions.com industry.
Why Did Google Stadia Fail?
Google Stadia was a cloud gaming service that allowed users to access games on any device running Chrome or a Chromium-based browser, as well as on Chromecast Ultra and Android devices, including smart TVs with Android OS. It promised to stream games in 4K resolution and 60 FPS with HDR support. The game catalog included both free-to-play games and titles available for purchase. Stadia also offered a Pro service with additional benefits like 4K resolution, 5.1 surround sound, HDR, and free games similar to PlayStation Plus. However, despite its offerings, Stadia failed to impress gamers due to its limited selection of AAA games, connectivity issues, and poor marketing efforts. It struggled to compete with its rivals in the cloud gaming market.
The final blow came from the low sales and disastrous release of Cyberpunk 2077. Even though playing the game on Stadia seemed to be a better experience than on other platforms, it was not enough to save the service. Google, lacking game development expertise and facing financial risks, ultimately decided to shut down Stadia. While some games originally planned for Stadia found new homes with other publishers, the service came to an end on January 18, 2023, with its internal studios and development departments closing on February 1, 2023.
Introducing ‘YouTube Playables’
Phil Harrison, the former chief of Stadia, previously hinted at Google’s intention to repurpose Stadia’s cloud streaming technology for other projects. While it’s uncertain whether Playables utilizes the same technology, it seems to overlap with Stadia in many aspects.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Google employees received an email invitation to join ‘Playables.’ This new service aims to allow users to instantly play and share games through the YouTube app on both desktop and mobile devices, including support for Android and iOS. Although Playables currently offers only one game, Stack Bounce, its potential lies in enabling Android developers to offer their apps on iOS without porting them. This feature could revolutionize game development.
However, many details about Playables remain unclear. While mobile devices and smart TVs have dedicated apps, it’s uncertain whether desktop users will have access to Playables. Additionally, it’s unknown if the service will be limited to mobile games or capable of handling AAA titles.
Since Playables will be closely connected to YouTube, Google won’t need to establish new studios but instead create a new department within the existing service. However, with the departure of key Stadia developers, there will be a learning curve and adjustments to working with YouTube’s infrastructure.
The Rise of Cloud Gaming
Cloud streaming has disrupted the gaming industry by offering cost-effective alternatives to traditional gaming consoles. Gamers no longer need to invest in expensive hardware; they can play games on their desktops, laptops, or mobile devices. Although they may need to purchase the games themselves, the overall cost is significantly lower than buying a console and games.
As a result, numerous cloud gaming services have emerged, including offerings from major players like Xbox/Microsoft, Sony’s PlayStation, Nvidia, and various independent/private companies. Given the trend, it’s no surprise that Google wants to enter the arena. However, to avoid repeating the mistakes of Stadia, Google must approach Playables with caution and potentially invest more in marketing efforts. Stadia failed to make a significant impact and had a short lifespan.
YouTube Playables: The Next Big Thing?
What are your thoughts on this potential gaming service from YouTube? Currently, we have limited information about Playables and its nature. It could resemble Facebook Gaming or be closer in concept to Stadia. All we can do is wait for an official announcement to learn more about the service. Hopefully, Playables will achieve greater success than Google’s previous attempt. In the meantime, enjoy gaming and stay tuned for updates!
