A brand new Season has arrived in Diablo 4, bringing with it a fresh start for players. But what happens to the progress you’ve made so far? While you’ll need to create a new “Seasonal character” to access Seasonal content, your previous achievements in exploring Sanctuary and battling demons will not go to waste. This comprehensive guide will explain everything you need to know about Diablo 4 Season resets, including the rewards and progression that players get to retain going forward, such as Renown and Altars of Lilith.
Understanding the Diablo 4 Season Reset – Eternal and Seasonal Realm Distinctions
Starting with Diablo 4 Season One, all characters are divided into two realms: the Eternal Realm and the Seasonal Realm. In order to participate in Seasonal content and earn Seasonal rewards, including the Battle Pass, players must create a fresh character specifically for the Seasonal Realm each Season. If you have already completed the campaign at least once on your account, new characters can skip the campaign and will have immediate access to mounts.
At the end of a Season (as well as the beginning of Season One), all characters are automatically shifted to the Eternal Realm. This realm offers the vanilla Diablo 4 experience, without any Seasonal features, storylines, or the ability to earn Battle Pass rewards. Characters from the Eternal Realm cannot engage or trade items with Seasonal Realm characters.
Although you won’t be able to utilize your previously acquired gear in the Seasonal Realm, there are several things that permanently transfer from the Eternal Realm to the Seasonal Realm. These include Altars of Lilith and Appearances. Below is a complete list based on the information provided in the July Developer Update and Blizzard’s News section.
Full List of Transferred Items Between Diablo 4 Seasons
- Altars of Lilith
- Explored areas on the map
- Renown associated with Altars of Lilith
- Mounts
- Transmog (Appearances)
- Titles
- Achievements
As long as a character has been logged in from the start of Diablo 4 Season One, all progress made on the map, Altars of Lilith, and Renown will carry over to all current and future characters. Together with the Campaign skip feature, this significantly speeds up the process of leveling Seasonal Characters and makes Seasonal content more accessible.
Achievements, Mounts, Titles, and Appearances are all ‘account-bound,’ meaning that every character will always have access to them. Yes, even that unsightly helmet you’ll never wear.
Why are there Season Resets in Diablo 4?
According to Blizzard, Season resets are implemented so that developers can introduce exciting new features without having to worry about balancing them around continually expanding content. It also prevents players from feeling overwhelmed, while enabling new players to join and play with friends who can’t stop raving about how amazing Diablo 4 is.
If you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, this might sound unconventional, but Blizzard has a track record of (usually) listening to player feedback, and the Seasonal model has proven successful in previous Diablo titles.
Diablo 4 is currently available on Battle.net.
