Exciting News for Tomba Fans
Almost a year ago, Limited Run Games announced plans to bring back the beloved 2.5D platformer, Tomba! And now, after months of anticipation, Tomba! is set to make its return to the gaming scene, this time landing on the Switch on 1st August 2024 (thanks, Gematsu!).
Tomba! Special Edition is not just a simple remaster. This enhanced version, developed for modern consoles using the Carbon engine, has been crafted in collaboration with original creator Tokuro Fujiwara. Together, they have infused new elements into the 1997 classic to attract a fresh audience.
Reimagining a Classic
In a recent interview on PlayStation.blog, Fujiwara and Alena Alambeigi, Vice President of Marketing at LRG, delved into the challenges of reviving the original PlayStation title. They discussed the innovative blend of 2D and 3D visuals that defined the game as a unique 2.5D platformer. The pair also explored Tomba’s enduring impact and why the time is ripe for its resurgence.
Fujiwara, known for his work at Capcom on iconic titles like Ghosts ‘n Goblins and Bionic Commando, has a rich history in game development. His departure from Capcom in 1996 marked the birth of Tomba!, a project born out of his desire to create something truly original.
Exciting Features to Look Forward To
Tomba! isn’t your typical platformer. It weaves together open-world and RPG elements, offering a plethora of side quests for players to uncover. With the Special Edition, new features are set to enhance the gaming experience. Some additions listed on Steam include the ability to save at any point, rewind gameplay, opt for analogue controls, access a museum filled with concept art, enjoy a remastered soundtrack, and even watch an interview with Fujiwara himself.
