Unofficial NES Nintendo World Championships Cartridge Successfully Backed on Kickstarter
An unofficial reproduction of the NES Nintendo World Championships cartridge has been successfully backed via Kickstarter, raising a total of £16,593 at the time of writing with an initial goal of £8,452.
This new ‘pro’ version celebrates the 35th anniversary of the 1990 World Championships event and includes the original cartridge along with the pro version, which is more challenging than the original.
The pro version starts players in World 8-1 of Super Mario Bros instead of World 1-1, and Rad Racer begins at level 3 while Tetris starts at level 8. Players can also set the time limits from 5 minutes to 15 minutes.
While intriguing, the game comes with a hefty price tag. The purple cartridge is priced at €140 (£119), and the limited edition gold cartridge, signed by competitive gamers Robin Mihara and Thor Aackerlund, costs a staggering €350 (£296) and is already sold out.
Concerns have been raised about the legality of the product, especially with the imminent release of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition on the Switch. When asked about potential legal issues, Mihara stated, “There have been dozens of Nwc repros made and have not been shut down”.
