CD Projekt Red Develops Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel in American Studios
The highly anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in development at CD Projekt Red’s studios in Boston and Vancouver. This move allows the developers to work on both Cyberpunk and The Witcher series simultaneously, while also adding an authentic American touch to the game.
Creating an Authentic American Experience
Acting executive producer Dan Hernberg emphasized the importance of capturing the American essence in Cyberpunk 2077. In a recent episode of the AnsweRED Podcast, Hernberg stated, “I think Cyberpunk is obviously a uniquely American story. It’s got a lot of like, punk energy, and [the tabletop game] was written by an American, so it just seems right to do it in America.”
Cultural Details Matter
While the original Cyberpunk 2077 was developed in Poland, the upcoming sequel aims to correct subtle cultural inaccuracies. Associate game director Paweł Sasko highlighted issues such as European-style manhole covers in Night City, streetlight placements, garbage bin positions, street sign colors, and curb designs. These details may not break immersion for players, but they do impact the overall authenticity of the game.
Speaking on the matter, Sasko explained, “It’s just that little thing where you’re like, ‘Well, maybe this wasn’t made by people who fully understand all of American culture.’”
Exploring American Culture
Working in American studios enables the developers to incorporate more American cultural references into the game. Sasko mentioned the influence of Hollywood, music, and various aspects of American society that can enrich the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. This immersion in American culture allows for a more immersive and authentic gameplay experience.
