Gimmick! 2’s First Gameplay Trailer Is Packed With Platforming Puzzles And Toe-Tapping Tunes

Clear River Games and Bitwave Games Unveil Gimmick! 2 Gameplay Trailer

Publisher Clear River Games and developer Bitwave Games have revealed the first gameplay trailer for Gimmick! 2, the long-awaited sequel to Sunsoft’s 8-bit platformer.

Originally teased at this year’s Limited Run Games showcase, this trailer provides a glimpse into the world of Gimmick! 2. Despite its visual overhaul, the sequel remains true to its platforming roots with challenges like star-chucking, moving platforms, and perilous lava pits.

The game also boasts an energetic soundtrack by renowned composer David Wise, adding to the overall charm of the gameplay experience. While Kirby fans await news of the pink puffball’s next adventure, Gimmick! 2 seems poised to offer an engaging platforming experience in the meantime.

Game Features and Screenshots

  • A Classic Challenge Modernised: Players can venture with Yumetaro in a world filled with challenges, enemies, and treasures, with the option to play in assisted mode or the challenging “Gimmick!” mode.
  • Star Physics: Yumetaro’s ability to summon and throw a star adds a unique element to gameplay, allowing players to activate switches, defend against enemies, and explore hidden secrets.
  • A Legendary Soundtrack: Featuring new compositions and remakes of classic tunes by David Wise, known for his exceptional work in video game music.
  • Blast from the Past: A nod to the original Gimmick! game released in 1992, which gained a cult following despite limited availability outside Scandinavia.

Gimmick! 2 shows promise with its updated gameplay mechanics and captivating soundtrack, although some fans may miss the pixel art style of the original. While a specific release date is yet to be announced, the game is expected to launch sometime in 2024.

After the surprise announcement of Gimmick! 2, the original game’s creator, Tomomi Saka, expressed surprise and disappointment at not being involved in the sequel’s development. Bitwave Games issued a formal apology, recognizing Saka’s contributions to the series.

Last year’s release of Gimmick! Special Edition was well-received as a nostalgic trip to the 8-bit era, earning praise for its faithful recreation of the original game. Fans are hopeful that Gimmick! 2 will continue this tradition of excellence and capture the magic of its predecessor.
