Astro Bot finds it “difficult to comment on” why Square Enix characters were notably absent

Team Asobi Shares Insights into Character Selection for Astro Bot

In a recent interview with journalist Stephen Totilo, Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet revealed the thought process behind choosing characters for the popular game Astro Bot. While Doucet mentioned that “almost 100%” of the most-wishlisted iconic Sony characters were included in the game, he refrained from commenting on why Square Enix characters were missing.

Doucet explained that when approaching various publishers for character approvals, the response was overwhelmingly positive. Most partners approved without hesitation, showing enthusiasm for the project. However, not all characters made the cut. When asked about the absence of characters like Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud or characters from Nier or Kingdom Hearts, Doucet emphasized the respect for each publisher’s decision.

Addressing the balance between recognizable characters and more obscure ones, Doucet acknowledged the challenge of appealing to a wide audience while also catering to those with a fondness for lesser-known characters. Despite knowing that some references may only be appreciated by a select few, Team Asobi aimed to create a diverse roster of characters in Astro Bot.
