Episode 2 Review – “Inside Man”

The Penguin Episode 2 Review

The following review contains spoilers for the second episode of The Penguin, “Inside Man”

Stepping into the second episode of a series after a thrilling premiere can be nerve-wracking. Will the show maintain its momentum? Or will it falter on its initial promises? Initially, “Inside Man” seemed to stumble with a questionable flashback and some iffy dialogue. However, as the episode progressed, it revealed itself to be a solid installment that moves towards a catastrophic finale planned for the Falcones and the Maronis.

The pacing of “Inside Man” is where the episode experiences a slight slowdown. While there are standout sequences like the Drops heist and the tense final confrontation, the moments in between lack the same intensity. Each scene offers valuable insights into characters like Sofia Falcone and their relationships with Oz, but the execution doesn’t match the excitement of the premiere.

Despite this, the series shines in certain sequences, showcasing Oswald’s knack for manipulation and problem-solving. The knife swap scene, in particular, demonstrates Oswald’s cunning and strategic prowess, reminiscent of moments in shows like Breaking Bad. While “Inside Man” may not reach the same level of tension as Breaking Bad, it hints at a similar narrative approach, setting the stage for future collaborations between Sofia and Oz.

Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti Shine

Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti deliver captivating performances, with Milioti’s portrayal of Sofia Falcone’s growing fury being particularly striking. As tensions rise, Oz positions himself as a key player in the escalating conflict between the Falcones and the Maronis. While his plan seems audacious, Farrell’s performance instills confidence in Oz’s abilities to navigate the dangerous game he’s playing.

Victor’s Role

Victor’s storyline in “Inside Man” offers glimpses of his internal struggles and hints at future developments. Rhenzy Feliz effectively conveys Victor’s anxiety and vulnerability, setting the stage for potential conflicts with Oz in the future.

While “Inside Man” serves as a foundation for future plotlines, it excels in deepening character relationships and building anticipation for upcoming conflicts. As the pieces are set in place, the stage is now set for episode 3 to kick things into high gear.
