Pathologic, the acclaimed plague-themed horror series from developer Ice-Pick Lodge, is making a comeback with a third instalment. This time, the game is introducing time travel into its already gruelling mix of survival and haunting theatrics.
The Evolution of Pathologic 2 and the Birth of Pathologic 3
The newly announced Pathologic 3 is a unique addition to the series. It is considered the second chunk of Pathologic 2, which was a half sequel and half remake of Ice-Pick Lodge’s cult-classic 2005 original. Pathologic 1 followed the story of a strange small town on the Russian Steppe as it faced a mysterious plague. In the original game, players could choose from three playable characters and three distinct routes through 12 days of increasing misery.
Due to financial constraints, only one path made it into Pathologic 2. However, Pathologic 3 will focus on expanding the story of another character, Daniil Dankovsky, who appeared in a standalone episode titled The Marble Nest in Pathologic 2.
What to Expect from Pathologic 3
Dankovsky, a young doctor and expert in thanatology, journeys to the mysterious town affected by the plague to further his research on death. In Pathologic 3, players will have 12 days to help Dankovsky stop the plague using various medical tools and techniques. Dankovsky will be able to examine potions, diagnose diseases, impose quarantines, vaccinate the population, deploy patrols, and more.
One significant addition to Dankovsky’s arsenal is the power of time travel. He can now travel forward to witness the future or go backward to correct mistakes of the past. This new element adds depth to the gameplay, allowing players to explore the town for insights, uncover secrets, and shape the stories of its inhabitants.
Release Plans and Conclusion
Currently, Pathologic 3 is scheduled for a PC release sometime next year. While details are limited at this time, fans of the series can look forward to a new and expanded storyline focused on Dankovsky’s journey in the plague-ridden town.
