Review – Ys X: Nordics (PlayStation 5)

Adventuring on the High Seas

Embark on a thrilling new seafaring journey with Adol Christin in the latest addition to the Ys series. The game kicks off on the open ocean, where Adol and his companion Dogi are en route to Celceta in search of excitement. Before long, adventure finds Adol as he crosses paths with the formidable pirate Karja Balta.

The story doesn’t start with Adol facing a shipwreck, but rather a showdown with Karja Balta, who, in a moment of ruthless efficiency, eliminates a crew member for failing to pay a toll. Although it may seem unlikely, Adol is compelled to join forces with the pirate as she enforces the laws of the sea as a member of the Balta Seaforce. Her reputation as the Pirate Princess strikes fear in the residents of Carnac, the small coastal town where Adol and Dogi make landfall.

Setting Sail into Uncharted Waters

Ys X: Nordics unfolds in the Obelia Gulf, a vast expanse dotted with islands. Karja, aligned with the Normans, allies with Adol to combat the Griegrs, a formidable threat to the realm. As mysterious events unfold in Carnac, the invisible force of Mana binds Adol and Karja together, setting the stage for both the narrative and gameplay. Despite the initial awkwardness, the bond between the two characters evolves, with Karja becoming a more likable figure over time.

Engaging Naval Battles

The game introduces innovative gameplay mechanics, including Naval Combat. Piloting a ship early in the game allows Adol to traverse the ocean, discover new islands, and participate in sea skirmishes. Upgrades for the ship enhance its capabilities, which prove essential in facing off against Griegr vessels. From cannon warfare to strategic positioning, naval battles add an exciting dimension to the gameplay.

Further expanding the naval combat are encounters with merchant ships, some of which may disguise themselves as enemies. Successful engagements yield rewards and contribute to the liberation of captured islands, transitioning from naval warfare to on-foot raids with Adol and Karja.

A Dynamic Combat System

In standard combat scenarios, players control Adol and Karja in tandem, with the AI controlling the alternate character. Switching between characters allows for fast-paced and cooperative combat dynamics. The Mana tethering system introduces a slower yet more destructive combat mode, enabling players to unleash devastating attacks and combine forces in battle.

Magic and Exploration Unleashed

The Mana system extends beyond combat, enabling innovative traversal mechanics like the Mana string and Mana board. These mystical abilities empower players to navigate challenging terrain, solve puzzles, and access hidden areas throughout the game world. Leveling up unlocks new skills and abilities, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.

An Auditory Masterpiece

Ys X: Nordics delivers a captivating soundtrack that complements every aspect of the gameplay, immersing players in the atmospheric backdrop of the adventure.

A Voyage Worth Taking

With its emphasis on exploration, engaging combat systems, and vast world to discover, Ys X: Nordics stands as a stellar addition to the Ys series. While some design choices may prove cumbersome, such as the vertical character UI, the overall experience remains compelling and immersive.
