Bungie and NetEast unveil free-to-play mobile shooter Destiny: Rising with closed alpha coming soon

Destiny: Rising – Bungie’s Free-to-Play Mobile Game

Bungie has announced the upcoming release of Destiny: Rising, a free-to-play mobile version of its popular sci-fi shooter series. Developed in collaboration with NetEase, a Chinese publisher, Destiny: Rising is set to undergo a “limited access closed alpha test” on both iOS and Android platforms starting in November.

The partnership between NetEase and Bungie was first revealed in 2018 when NetEase made a $100 million investment in the studio. Rumors of Destiny coming to mobile started circulating in the summer of 2022, and now, Destiny: Rising has been unveiled as a “brand-new adventure set in an alternate Destiny timeline, exploring a narrative in the post-Dark Age era”.

According to the announcement, players will embark on this new adventure alongside legendary Iron Lords, as humanity rises against alien forces threatening its existence. Set in various locations like Haven, Jiangshi, and the Red Sea Rift, Destiny: Rising promises a shared world experience with single-player, cooperative, and competitive multiplayer gameplay. NetEase is teasing a mix of PvP and PvE modes, including campaigns and six-player cooperative strikes.

Players can look forward to a diverse roster of playable characters, both familiar faces from Destiny’s past and new, intriguing characters. Each character will have unique abilities and stories, and players can switch between first-person and third-person perspectives using a controller or touchscreen.

While a release date for Destiny: Rising has not been announced yet, the closed alpha test is scheduled to begin on November 1st. Interested players can register on the official website to participate in the test.

This announcement comes amidst a series of updates for Destiny 2, including the revelation that next year’s Codename: Apollo expansion will feature a “Metroidvania-inspired destination”. Bungie continues to generate excitement for the game’s future following recent layoffs at the studio.
