Alan Wake 2 is PS5 Pro enhanced, will feature upgraded versions of Quality and Performance mode

Remedy Unveils PS5 Pro Enhancements for Alan Wake 2

In a recent blog post, Remedy announced the exciting news of the PS5 Pro enhancements for their upcoming horror game, Alan Wake 2, set to release in 2023. The developer promised to fully utilize the capabilities of the newly revealed PS5 Pro to elevate the horror gaming experience.

Enhanced Quality and Performance Modes

Alan Wake 2 will feature upgraded Quality and Performance modes specifically tailored for the mid-generation PS5 Pro console. These modes will make use of Sony’s proprietary upscaling technology, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).

The Quality mode on PS5 Pro will run at 30fps with ray tracing reflections and deliver a stunning 4K output resolution. On the other hand, the Performance mode will target 60fps, offer a 4K output resolution, and maintain image quality similar to the base PS5’s Quality mode, albeit without ray tracing.

According to Remedy, the PS5 Pro’s Performance Mode will showcase higher output resolution and enhanced visual details compared to the base PS5. The overall image stability, fog effects, volumetric lighting, and shadow accuracy have all been significantly improved on the Pro version.

Technical Upgrades for PS5 Pro

Remedy shared insights into the technical enhancements made for Alan Wake 2 on the PS5 Pro. By increasing the rendering resolution and experimenting with upgrading the 60fps Performance mode from 1440p to 4K while implementing PSSR, Remedy successfully improved image crispness and stability during motion.

The studio acknowledged the challenges of integrating ray tracing into a visually rich game like Alan Wake 2, emphasizing the complexity of achieving a balance between frame rate, visual quality, and technical constraints. Despite the hurdles, Remedy expressed their commitment to delivering cutting-edge visuals in their games.

Ray Tracing and Visual Improvements

While discussing the benefits of ray tracing in Alan Wake 2, Remedy highlighted the intricate light-material interactions and dense environments that make tracing and shading costly in terms of hardware resources. The studio mentioned the game’s dense geometric design and the use of a GPU-driven rendering pipeline to create visually stunning, densely populated forest scenes.

Alan Wake 2 stands out as one of the top horror games available on PS5, with its second expansion, The Lake House, launching alongside the main game. Fans can expect an immersive and visually stunning horror experience on the PS5 Pro.
