PlayStation Studios Boss Committed to New IP and Creative Risks

New IP Strategy from PlayStation Studios Emphasized by Sony Interactive Entertainment Co-CEO

Sony Interactive Entertainment co-CEO Hermen Hulst has reiterated the importance of developing new intellectual property (IP) within PlayStation Studios and emphasized the need for developers to take creative risks. Despite this, he also acknowledged the necessity for PlayStation to balance innovation with meeting player expectations.

New IPs from PlayStation Studios are as important as ‘sustainable financials’

During the recent closure of Firewalk Studios and Neon Koi, Hulst expressed his commitment to fostering creativity and introducing new IP. He highlighted the significance of maintaining “sustainable financials” alongside encouraging experimentation and fresh ideas. Hulst emphasized the importance of financial stability as PlayStation endeavors to grow its offerings.

Hulst pointed to economic challenges as a driving force behind PlayStation’s focus on diversifying revenue streams. He emphasized that the revenue from single-player games alone may not be sufficient to ensure the financial health of the company.

While the closure of Firewalk Studios was anticipated, the shutdown of Neon Koi without a game release raised questions about Sony’s expansion strategies. Hulst acknowledged the need for strategic decisions when expanding to new platforms and addressing any shortcomings in meeting player expectations.
