Boba Fett card suspended from Star Wars: Unlimited TCG

The Force behind the Boba Fett Suspension

The Star Wars: Unlimited card Boba Fett (Collecting the Bounty) has been temporarily removed from play in the Premier format. Lead designer Danny Schaefer announced this change in a blog post on Wednesday, citing it as a “development mistake”. While Boba Fett is not banned outright, its usage will be restricted starting from Nov. 8.

A Critical Oversight

Schaefer expressed regret, stating, “If we knew back then what we know now, we never would have allowed him to be printed with that combination of abilities, stats, and deploy cost.”

Unbalancing Act

The Boba Fett card was present in decks of 55% of winners in a recent competitive tournament, despite there being 54 different leader cards available. This imbalance led to the decision to suspend the card, as banning it outright or retiring it were considered less favorable options.

Leader of the Pack

Schaefer highlighted the unique influence of leaders in the game, emphasizing, “Leaders carry special weight in this game because they define archetypes…and because a deck can only ever have one leader.” The dominance of Boba Fett was hindering the diversity of viable midrange leaders.

Galactic Success and Suspension

Star Wars: Unlimited has been praised for its innovative gameplay since its launch in March 2024. The unique combat style and seamless integration of the beloved IP into a TCG format have been well-received by players and critics alike.

Schaefer has not ruled out the possibility of Boba Fett making a comeback in the future. Polygon has reached out to Fantasy Flight for more information and will update as needed.
