Microsoft is gearing up to release more Xbox consoles in the future, according to the company’s gaming CEO Phil Spencer. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Spencer confirmed that there will be new Xbox consoles down the line, but he ruled out the possibility of a mid-generation Xbox Series X.
Spencer highlighted the company’s focus on expanding its reach across various platforms, with particular emphasis on PC and cloud gaming. Despite the growth in Xbox players on PC and cloud platforms, Microsoft is not abandoning the traditional console market.
Spencer assured fans that Microsoft will continue to develop more consoles in the future, as well as explore opportunities with other devices. The mention of “other devices” has sparked speculation about a potential handheld console in the works.
When asked about the possibility of a mid-generation upgrade for Xbox consoles, similar to what Sony has done with the PS5 Pro, Spencer dismissed the idea. He emphasized the importance of creating hardware that delivers unique value to players and creators, rather than just incremental upgrades.
Spencer also revealed that Microsoft is currently working on handheld prototypes and is studying the market to develop a vision for a handheld device. While a concrete product may be a few years away, it’s clear that Microsoft is not shying away from exploring new hardware possibilities.
