Mid-Gen Refresh Like PS5 Pro Is Unnecessary, Says Xbox Boss

Xbox chief Phil Spencer believes that the concept of mid-gen hardware upgrades like the PS5 Pro is outdated and unnecessary. In a recent round of interviews, he expressed his opinion that the benefits of the PS5 Pro do not outweigh its cost.

Phil Spencer’s Views on Mid-Gen Refresh such as PS5 Pro

During an interview with RollingStone, Spencer was asked about Xbox’s potential plans for a mid-gen upgrade similar to the PS5 Pro. He mentioned that with the advancements in technology, it has become increasingly challenging to deliver significant improvements in the middle of a console’s life cycle.

Spencer questioned the need for new devices to provide a truly unique experience on screen, comparing it to the transition from standard definition to high definition with the original Xbox to Xbox 360. He noted that it is now more difficult to demonstrate substantial benefits with mid-gen upgrades.

In another interview with Bloomberg, Spencer seemed to criticize Sony’s approach, stating that “we’re not going to expand the market with $1,000 consoles.” He emphasized the importance of innovation and flexibility in introducing new business models, devices, and accessibility options to attract new players.

It’s evident that Spencer believes in a different strategy to reach a broader audience. What are your thoughts on this perspective?
