Matt Forbeck’s New Tabletop Adventure in the World of Minecraft
Matt Forbeck, renowned author and lead designer of the Marvel Multiverse RPG, has teamed up with his son Marty to create a new tabletop adventure set in the beloved world of Minecraft. Available for pre-order now, Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper aims to bring the wide appeal of the online crafting game into a simple and engaging role-playing experience.
Details of the Adventure
Penguin Random House, the publisher of the gamebook, has not revealed much about the mechanics of the game, following the trend of many pre-orders for major IP-based tabletop releases. The cover of the book features two six-sided dice, and the listing mentions that “four dice” are included with the gamebook. It also includes a “removable character sheet” and a “rules reference” to assist players in tracking their progress through the adventure, suitable for both solo play and group sessions.
The story unfolds in an isolated village that has been overrun by “illagers,” a hostile mob from the Minecraft universe. Players are tasked with aiding the village by uncovering the source of the problem (the Temple of the Charged Creeper) and putting an end to it, reminiscent of classic Dungeons & Dragons quests.
Matt Forbeck’s Influence
While there have been previous collaborations between Minecraft and Dungeons & Dragons, such as the Lightning Keep adventure for younger players, this standalone adventure is a unique creation from the Forbeck duo. Matt Forbeck’s extensive experience as a tabletop game designer and author of novels for various franchises like D&D, Minecraft, Halo, and Life is Strange, adds a level of intrigue to the mystery surrounding the game’s mechanics. The reception of the game among Minecraft enthusiasts and tabletop gamers will become clearer when the book is released in July 2025.
The hardcover edition of Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper can be pre-ordered on the Penguin Random House website for $20.
