Path of Exile 2 Early Access Review

Path of Exile 2 Early Access Review

After just an hour of diving into Path of Exile 2’s early access version, it became clear that this game was about to consume all of my free time. Grinding Gears Games has done it again by delivering a sequel to one of my favorite action RPGs that has already captured a decade of my gaming life. While the game is not without its early access quirks and issues with loot drops, the improvements in gameplay, endgame mechanics, and buildcrafting make this ARPG a standout title worth sinking hours into.

Gameplay and Endgame Mechanics

Path of Exile 2 sticks to the familiar formula of battling through hordes of enemies, facing off against intimidating bosses, and constantly managing your inventory while seeking out better loot. The early access version currently covers the first three acts of the campaign, offering around 60 hours of gameplay before delving into the extensive endgame content. Despite some technical jank and unfinished features, the overall experience of progressing through the game is incredibly enjoyable.

Storytelling and Characters

While the storytelling in Path of Exile 2 may not break new ground, the characters and world-building within each act add depth to the overall narrative. From treasure hunters to desert nomads, each character brings something unique to the story. The potential for where the plot may go in the second half is still up in the air, but the current storytelling is engaging enough to keep players invested.

Each class offers a unique way to play that dramatically mixes things.

Gameplay Diversity and Complexity

Path of Exile 2 pushes the boundaries of gameplay complexity with its intricate skill trees and diverse character classes. Whether you prefer long-range combat, melee battles, or minion-based strategies, each class offers a distinct playstyle that sets it apart from traditional ARPGs. The depth of character customization and equipment loadout adds a layer of strategy that will keep players engaged for hours on end.

Challenges with Loot

One area where Path of Exile 2 falls short is in its loot system. While finding powerful items can enhance your gameplay experience, the game’s stinginess with loot drops can be frustrating. The lack of class-specific gear and the rarity of unique items may leave players feeling underwhelmed. Improvements in the loot system could enhance the overall rewarding experience of the game.

I hope loot gets at least a little more generous during early access.

Endgame Content and Exploration

Once players progress into the endgame content of Path of Exile 2, they are met with a wealth of engaging activities and challenges. From the procedurally generated Atlas map to special trials and endgame bosses, there is no shortage of content to keep players entertained. Despite some early access jankiness, the endgame experience is robust and well-crafted, offering a significant amount of content for dedicated players.

Final Thoughts

While Path of Exile 2 has its share of early access issues and technical hiccups, the core gameplay elements and engaging endgame content make it a promising addition to the ARPG genre. Players who are willing to overlook some of the game’s shortcomings may find themselves lost in its world for hours on end. With potential improvements in loot distribution and further development of the storyline, Path of Exile 2 has the makings of a standout title in the ARPG landscape.
