Review – Fantasian: Neo Dimension (PlayStation 5)

A Tribute to Classic JRPG’s

If you consider yourself a dedicated fan of JRPG’s, chances are you’ve heard of Fantasian, an original game that was initially exclusive to Apple Arcade in 2021. However, due to this limited release, you may not have had the opportunity to experience it. Fortunately, the JRPG community’s wishes have been granted as Fantasian has now received a multi-console release under the title Fantasian: Neo Dimension.

Created by the mastermind behind Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and featuring the talents of renowned composer Nobuo Uematsu, known for his work on Final Fantasy soundtracks, the game promises a unique and captivating experience. With such legendary designers at the helm, Fantasian: Neo Dimension delivers on many fronts, showcasing innovation and creativity in the realm of JRPGs.

The Art of Fantasian

One of the standout features of Fantasian: Neo Dimension is its visual design and art style. The game utilizes real dioramas seamlessly integrated into its visuals, creating environments that closely resemble the early 3D Final Fantasy games. This innovative approach to graphics adds a layer of depth and immersion to the game, evoking nostalgia for fans of classic RPG titles.

The Gameplay Experience

While the gameplay in Fantasian: Neo Dimension may appear simple at first glance, it offers a satisfying and engaging experience. The hand-crafted environments, fixed camera angles, and intricate level design immerse players in a world plagued by the mechanical infection known as Mechteria. As protagonist Leo embarks on a journey to recover his lost memories, players are introduced to a diverse cast of characters and themes commonly found in JRPGs.

The turn-based battles in the game are straightforward yet strategic, with a unique targeting mechanic that adds depth to combat. Players can bend spells and utilize various tactics to overcome enemies, reminiscent of other successful JRPG titles like I am Setsuna and Lost Sphear. The inclusion of the Dimengeon system also provides a fresh twist on traditional random encounters, allowing players to customize their grinding experience.

Despite its initial appearance of simplicity, Fantasian: Neo Dimension offers a challenging experience, especially during boss battles. The game’s difficulty spikes require strategic thinking and adaptation, providing a rewarding gameplay experience for both new and seasoned players.

The Legacy of Fantasian

With its homage to classic JRPGs and unique gameplay features, Fantasian: Neo Dimension caters to fans of the genre with a nostalgic charm. The game’s simplistic yet engaging mechanics, combined with a captivating soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu, create a memorable experience for players looking to dive into a world reminiscent of 80s and 90s RPGs.

Despite minor interface issues stemming from its mobile origins, Fantasian: Neo Dimension shines as a must-play title now available on multiple consoles, including the PlayStation 5. The game’s evolution from its original limited release to a widely accessible edition showcases its dedication to providing an exceptional gaming experience for all players.
