Capcom’s Strategy to Revive Dormant IPs
Capcom surprised fans at this year’s Game Awards show with the rebirth of classic IPs like Okami and Onimusha.
In a recent press release on its official website, Capcom revealed that this revival is part of a larger initiative to bring back “dormant IPs” that have not seen new releases in some time.
“The company is working to further enhance corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, which includes reviving past IPs like the two titles announced above (Onimusha, Okami), in order to continuously produce highly efficient, high-quality titles.”
Capcom has been actively revitalizing old franchises, such as Ace Attorney, and has seen success with collections like Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection. Looking towards the future, they have a new Monster Hunter game in development and another fighting collection on the horizon.
In June of this year, during a shareholders meeting, Capcom hinted at potential plans for iconic franchises like Mega Man. A survey conducted the same month asked fans which series they would like to see remade, with titles like Breath of Fire ranking in the top 5.
Another Japanese gaming company, Sega, has also been focusing on resurrecting classic IPs, with announcements to revive franchises such as Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Jet Set Radio, and Virtua Fighter.
