Ubisoft recently launched a new game called Captain Laserhawk: The Game, introducing a top-down multiplayer shooter that integrates NFTs and blockchain technology. The game is currently available in early access on PC and surprisingly incorporates Rayman into its gameplay.
Based on information from Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Captain Laserhawk: The Game draws inspiration from the Netflix series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, which in turn was influenced by the Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon spin-off. Rayman, a beloved character from the Ubisoft universe, serves as the announcer for in-game deathmatches but is not a playable character.
Players are required to possess a Niji Warrior NFT in order to access and play the game. Additionally, a Rayman profile picture can be acquired for 750 virtual coins and associated with the Niji Warrior NFT. Beyond these features, Rayman’s involvement in Captain Laserhawk: The Game is minimal. Despite its ties to a popular franchise, the game has been discreetly released by Ubisoft with limited promotion, lacking widespread recognition on social media platforms.
Notable a few years back, NFTs garnered attention from major players in the gaming industry such as Electronic Arts, Take-Two, and Square Enix. However, interest in NFTs has waned as the sector shifted focus to the trending technology of AI. Ubisoft’s venture into NFTs includes the Quartz platform, initially met with criticism upon its announcement. The company also experimented with NFT features in Ghost Recon Breakpoint before discontinuing support for the game in 2022.
