Final Fantasy 16 Director Is “Blown Away” by PS5 Specs

Hiroshi Takai, the main director of Final Fantasy 16, is thoroughly impressed by the speed and power of the PS5. In particular, he points to the console’s memory size and SSD speed as something that separates it from the pack. Earlier in March, combat director Ryoto Suzuki explained why Final Fantasy 16 could not run on PS4, similarly pointing to the PS5’s memory and SSD as a necessity for the game’s seamless battle system.

FF16 will use PS5 Dualsense to enhance Chocobo riding

In an official Playstation blog post, Takai explained that many consoles fail “to strike the right balance between the capabilities of the hardware and the size of the memory.” This is primarily why he was struck by the PS5’s specs. He was “simply blown away” by the speed of the console’s internal SSD.

It’s only thanks to the size of the PS5’s memory that Square Enix could render all of the character and environmental models in the game, in addition to the lighting and shadows. It is allows for seamless transitions between the game’s “resource-intensive gameplay to equally intensive cutscenes and back again.”

Takai also reveals that the PS5 Dualsense’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback will enhance the feeling of lifting up heavy gates and riding chocobos. It will also convert sound effects to haptic data, so that it can portray something as subtle as “movements of the air.”

Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed that the game will run at 60 FPS on PS5 for those who turn on Performance Mode.
