The Horse Cart serves as an essential asset in Dead Rails, proving invaluable for storage and transit when you’re away from the train. Whether you’re taking on the Pony Express challenges or exploring independently, this guide will explain how to locate, equip, and effectively use a Horse Cart during your gameplay.
Understanding the Horse Cart
True to its name, the Horse Cart is a portable storage unit that a tamed horse can pull. Although it lacks the capacity and protection offered by the Train, it represents a flexible alternative for players to transport loot, weapons, or even teammates. It’s particularly advantageous when the Train is not within reach.
Locating the Horse Cart in Dead Rails and Equipping It

Horse Carts are typically discovered inside a barn with a striking red exterior, though they are often positioned away from the main railway lines. Be prepared to encounter both regular and fast zombies in this area, along with other valuable items such as a Saddle, potential Horses for taming, and assorted Junk.
Before you can utilize a Horse Cart, you’ll need to tame a horse by acquiring and equipping a Saddle. Saddles can be either looted or purchased at the General Store located in towns. After successfully saddling a horse, you can attach the cart, making it ready for use. Players in the Cowboy class start with a tamed horse, streamlining this process slightly.
You have the capability to weld various materials onto the Horse Cart. Strengthening it with Sheet Metal or Barbed Wire can enhance its defensive capabilities and provide protection from attacks, especially when you’re distanced from your train and team. Additionally, you can weld multiple Horse Carts together and have either a horse or a unicorn pull them. Players in the Horse class can also pull the cart directly.
To boost offensive abilities, consider adding a Maxim Gun along with ammo to transform your cart into a fortified mobile base. If you’re carrying minimal loot, you have the option to weld chairs onto the cart for teammates to ride along.
If you wish to detach the cart, you can store it in your sack, have another player take it, or attempt jumping twice to release it.
While the Horse Cart may not rival the versatility of the Train, it offers an effective means of transport for items and fellow players when far from the train. Its ability to have weapons welded on for defense enhances its practicality even further.
