Respeccing in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn’t a freebie—you’ll need a consumable called a Recoat. Since dialing in a build on your first pass is tough, you’ll probably want to reset points at some stage. Whether you’re trying to squeeze more damage out of Maelle or tighten up Lune’s support kit, a respec lets you rework the numbers without starting over.
Below is how to respec, plus reliable ways to get more Recoats as you progress.
How to respec in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Every time your party levels up in Clair Obscur, you distribute attribute points and unlock skills. If you later decide that spread isn’t working, you can reset it—at a cost.
You must spend a Recoat to respec. There are a couple of important limits to keep in mind before you burn one:
- A single Recoat resets either attribute points or skill points—never both. To redo everything for one character, you’ll need two Recoats.
- Recoats are character-specific. Resetting two different party members requires two separate Recoats.
Once you have a Recoat, use it like this:
- Find an Expedition Flag on the map (they’re the markers with golden sparkles). These also work as heal points and fast travel hubs.
- Select the character you want to respec.
- Choose either “upgrade attributes” or “learn skills,” depending on what you plan to reset.
- For attributes: select “reset attributes” at the bottom of the screen.
- For skills: select “consume to reset tree” at the top of the screen.
You unlock the respec option as soon as you reach the first Expedition Flag in the Meadows Corridor and assign some points. It’s smart to hold onto your early Recoats until you’ve earned more levels and have a clearer idea of your build direction.
How to get more Recoats in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
You’ll pick up Recoats a few different ways, with the most common being random drops from enemies. They’re rare early on, but drop rates feel noticeably better after a few hours. For example, the Ice Golem in Act 3 is a solid source. If you discover an enemy that reliably drops Recoats, you can farm them by resting at the nearest Expedition Flag to reset the area and running the fight again.
Beyond drops, you can buy Recoats from Gestral Merchants and find them as world loot. New players can snag an early one in the prologue by talking to Nicolas, the painter in the red coat and top hat. Agree to duel him—he’ll hand over a Recoat whether you win or lose.
Another easy pickup is near Noco’s Hut in Flying Waters. From the teleport waypoint, take the narrow path behind you and drift slightly left past the big arrowhead-shaped rock. Angle right toward the large round tunnel ahead; just before the entrance, look on the flat stone to the left for a Recoat waiting to be grabbed.
