Once you’ve tucked away that first optical disk, the next bottleneck in Grounded 2 is brittle quartzite. You need it not only to craft brittle whetstone for early weapon upgrades, but also to build the smithing station that makes those upgrades possible. The catch: quartzite only shows up in a handful of specific spots, and it’s easier to miss than you’d think. We initially assumed it was all underground behind root clumps — that’s only part of the picture.
Below is where to find brittle quartzite in Grounded 2 and how to turn it into brittle whetstone without wasting time.
Where to find brittle quartzite in Grounded 2

Brittle quartzite spawns in a mix of places: some nodes are underground, some hide behind root tangles your buggy can chew through, and others sit just off well-traveled paths. Look for small, reddish-brown lumps with sharp edges — they’re easy to mistake for regular stones at a glance. The in-game resource finder can’t ping mineral deposits, so drop your own markers or rely on the map above as a rough reference.
Spots that have produced brittle quartzite so far:
- Next to the milk molar in the cave where you fetch an optical disk for story progress.
- Inside the red ant hatchery anthill near the snackbar. From the first lit hall, turn right; roots block a blob of raw science, and the quartzite sits behind those roots.
- On top of the snackbar platform, wedged between the wooden planks and the snackbar’s wall.
- At the base of the oak tree’s roots, north of the Shlapz Portable Music Player point of interest.
- Under a book to the south and slightly east of that same music player.
- Beside a rock just after you exit the hedge to the southwest of the snackbar.
- Southeast of the picnic table and north of the pink bloom where the praying mantis nymph hangs out.
- In a cave beneath the backpack where the Masked Stranger stashes spicy candies.
- Across the western half of the War-Torn Anthill, which also serves as a through-route to the Veggie Garden.
- Pine Hill ranger station: pick up three loose pieces on-site.
For the anthill run, go in on your red ant soldier buggy and use “recruit” on worker ants at least once — it seems to settle the locals so they won’t swarm you. And if you think you’ve found a quartzite node but aren’t getting a prompt, hop off the buggy and walk up to it; interactions on minerals won’t appear while mounted.
There are almost certainly more spawn points out there. Like other resources in Grounded 2, brittle quartzite respawns after a couple of in‑game days, so it’s worth revisiting any easy, on‑your‑route locations to keep a steady supply coming.
How to get brittle whetstone in Grounded 2

Take your brittle quartzite to any workbench and open the Resources tab to craft brittle whetstone. The recipe is simple: one chunk of brittle quartzite equals one whetstone. Early nodes typically break into several chunks, so clearing a couple of reliable spots should net enough material to craft roughly half a dozen brittle whetstones and jump-start your upgrades.
