If you’re hunting for darkwood in Hytale, it’s not just about stepping into any forest — you need the right trees. Like lightwood, only specific species qualify, and the game doesn’t spell it out. If you’re eyeing an upgrade for the farmer’s workbench or want new building pieces, here’s where to grab the logs you need.
Where to find darkwood in Hytale
Darkwood logs come from cedar trees. You’ll find cedars in the snowy plains of the Whisperfront Frontiers (Zone 3). Bring an axe — any tier works — and start chopping.
Cedars look like tall, bluish-green pines, and if you look closely you’ll spot pinecones tucked between the needles. They can appear as full cedar groves on brown plains, or turn up mixed with redwood in greener patches.
Not sure which is which at a glance? Redwood skews greener overall, has a redder trunk, and you won’t see any cones on it. The cone-bearing, blue-tinted pines are the cedars you want.

Once you’ve got a stack of darkwood, you can craft new structures — like windows and other decor — and upgrade the farmer’s workbench, which in turn helps you push your animal farm further.
