Reports: Police responding to Ubisoft Montreal office

A “police operation” is in progress at Ubisoft Montreal’s offices, according to the Montreal police service as well as reports from social media and Canadian news outlets. Helicopter footage shows that some employees have gone to the building’s roof. Public safety vehicles are on the scene with specialized officers involved.

The City of Montreal Police Service confirmed on Twitter that there is a “police operation” in the area, and asked people to stay away. TVA Nouvelles reported on television that the police service has deployed tactical units, the equivalent of a SWAT team; armed officers have been seen on the scene in news footage.

A Ubisoft representative told Polygon: “We are aware of the situation and working with local authorities.”

Initial reports suggested a possible hostage situation of some kind. However, the police service has yet to provide details about the nature of the operation. In a follow-up tweet, SPVM said that “officers have been sent to the location following a 911 call,” and added that they are “inspecting the premises” and that there have been “no injuries reported.”

Eric Pope, a well-known community manager with the studio who is working from home at the moment, said he recognized co-workers fleeing to the building’s roof in aerial footage shown on television.

Others on social media had eyewitness reports and details from the scene.

TVA Nouvelles noted that the office building in question also houses businesses other than Ubisoft Montreal, so it’s unclear if the crisis directly involves the studio.

Ubisoft Montreal, in existence since 1993 with more than 3,500 employees, is one of the French publisher’s most important studios. It is the lead developer on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the latest entry in the long-running franchise, which launched this week.
