Respawn Entertainment Apex Legends developer working on new IP

Californian developer Respawn Entertainment is forever toiling away on its free-to-play battle royale, Apex Legends. The game is almost two years old at this point, and has since established itself as one of the largest battle royales on the market. Since the studio’s inception a decade ago, the team has worked on other franchises though, like Titanfall and Star Wars. Now, the developer might just be ready to move onto something new.

A now-removed job listing on the developer’s official website revealed some interesting info about what’s next. The team is staffing up its core studio, to work on some interesting things. Specifically, it’s looking for a generalist software engineer to work on a brand new IP.

The listing revealed a few more details too. Apparently, work is to be done on creating a game that will allow “adventuring forever,” which sure sounds like another EA-buzzword for live service. The publisher has had mixed results with live services, although Respawn Entertainment’s core effort with Apex Legends has done well.

Now, it must be said that this could have been erroneous, given that the listing has now been removed. However, it’s much more likely that the listing revealed a little bit too much about the project. Respawn hasn’t officially announced work on its next game, but it has recently stated that the team isn’t working on Titanfall 3.

A balancing act

It seems publisher EA it taking a two-pronged approach with Respawn Entertainment. The developer has juggled new IP with existing franchises over the past decade, and that trend looks to continue. EA said that Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order did far better than expected, which could be a reason why the team has been given free reigns on a new IP.

In the meantime, work will continue on Apex Legends of course, before we hear anything about this mysterious new title.
