First Mortal Kombat movie images, details revealed

After being delayed from releasing this month to April 2021, more and more questions have been stacking up about the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie. While we already know the movie will stay true to its source material, nobody really knew what it was about. Now those questions have been answered thanks to an exclusive report from Entertainment Weekly. The feature goes over the plot of the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie and gives us a first look at what we can expect to see on screens.

Naturally, the Mortal Kombat movie will feature blood. Lots of blood. Fatalities are already coming to the big screen, but apparently, there’s a reason behind all the violence. As director Simon McQuoid told EW: “Blood represents family. Blood represents a connection. Blood represents who we are.” It should be no surprise then that many of these new screenshots feature somewhat bloodied characters.

Making sense out of the violence

The real question here is whether the Mortal Kombat movie will just be gratuitous or if there’ll be something actually going on. From EW’s piece, it seems like there’s been some real attention paid to the game’s lore, and it’s being incorporated into the movie’s story. The movie will start with a fight between the clans of Hanzo and Bi-Han. Those that have followed the lore of Mortal Kombat know these two go on to become Scorpion and Noob Saibot.

Later on in the movie, viewers will be introduced to a wholly new character. Cole Young, played by actor and martial artist Lewis Tan, is a washed-up MMA fighter. He sports an unusual birthmark shaped like the Mortal Kombat symbol, and because of this, is hunted down by Sub-Zero. This all leads to Young meeting many of the game’s recognizable faces — Jax Briggs, Sonya Blade, Raiden, and others.

With all this new info, I’m sure many are geared up to finally see Mortal Kombat on the big screen. Well, the wait won’t be much longer. The Mortal Kombat movie is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on April 16.
