Activision goes after Call of Duty stat-tracking website SBMM Warzone

When it comes to competitive first-person shooters, your statistics help you you determine where you stand among the other players around you. While games do offer their own stat-tracking, sometimes it can be beneficial to get a third party to lend some expertise. Unfortunately for players of Call of Duty: Warzone, it seems that Activision has some issues with that. As revealed on Twitter, popular stat-tracker SBMM Warzone has been hit with an order by Activision to close up shop by Monday, March 29.

Needless to say, this has caused plenty of consternation. For the website creators, they are trying desperately to reach out to the publisher to come to an agreement. The problem Activision seems to have stemmed from a potential breach of privacy.

SBMM Warzone is alleged to have violated Activision’s API terms of use and infringed on its copyright. This is in addition to other violation of privacy laws in both the United States and the European Union.

While users may argue that it does nothing of that sort, it would seem that Activision does have the legal high ground here.

Public tug of war

If you are not sure what SBMM Warzone does for Call of Duty: Warzone players, it is quite straightforward. SBMM Warzone aggregates data from players’ public profiles, as well as users who opted in to data collection. This helps the processes under the hood to figure out the rating systems in place that determine the skill-based matchmaking. For players, the lack of transparency with the matchmaking system has caused some concerns.

The utility that SBMM Warzone brings to players here is definitely attractive. This is probably why many have expressed their dismay at the decision to shut the website down. Despite the public outcry, it is hard to see this going anywhere but in Activision’s favor.

The creators of SBMM Warzone have promised users refunds if they have to close up shop for good.
