Everyone has their own opinions on what constitutes a good video game map, and Diablo fans are no exception. Now, some players are expressing divided opinions after franchise general manager Rod Fergusson said that there are “no plans” for including an overlay map in Diablo 4.
No plans at the moment.

Overlay maps usually allow players to move while looking at the map. They’re a staple of games with large areas to explore, especially MMORPGs. Though Diablo 4 does include a minimap which will help you see where you’re going, it seems that Blizzard wants your eyes on the action rather than peeled to a map. Some fans applauded the change, though others are stung by the planned omission. Several proponents of the feature note that Diablo 2 is the game that popularized overlay maps in the genre to begin with.
“I’m not a fan [of overlay maps],” said one Reddit user. “I understand the purpose so that people are forced to look at the game, but I found myself just constantly pulling up the big map, which felt cumbersome. The choice takes away from the enjoyment of the game.”
“I never use the minimap in any games unless it’s like a MOBA,” said a third. “I’d rather just open the map. Overlay is a perfect quickcheck.”
Regardless of where you fall on this debate, it doesn’t seem likely that Blizzard will change its mind on it, but it’s certainly possible. Diablo 4 will release on June 6, though you can play starting June 1 if you have the Deluxe or Ultimate editions of the game.
