Street Fighter 6 Modern vs. Classic vs. Dynamic Control, explained

In the latest installment of the Street Fighter series, Street Fighter 6, Capcom has offered three unique control schemes: Modern, Classic, and Dynamic. Each of these control schemes caters to a different type of player, allowing for a more accessible and exciting gaming experience. However, players may find it challenging to choose the correct control scheme, so we have created this guide to help clarify the differences between each control scheme.

Classic Controls

The Classic control scheme is designed for veterans of the series who are already familiar with the traditional Street Fighter layout. This control scheme offers a separate button for each Light, Medium, and Heavy punch and kick, which provides flexibility in executing special attacks. However, it demands precision from the user as most special attacks are executed based on the strength of the punch or kick.

Additionally, the complexity of commands is high in Classic controls. Players need to execute a series of actions to perform moves, such as Ryu’s Hadouken, which requires a ‘Quarter Circle Forward’ input followed by a punch. Many Super Arts begin with a double ‘Quarter Circle,’ making it challenging to execute in the heat of battle, even for experienced players.

Modern Controls

A dramatic shift is seen with the Modern control scheme compared to the Classic control scheme. The Classic 6-button layout is replaced with a button for Light, Medium, and Heavy attacks. Combining the button press with a direction can sometimes change the attack, but not always. This scheme offers an easy-to-use control layout as players can perform special attacks with a single button press.

Super Arts are executed by pressing 2 or 3 buttons simultaneously, making it easier for players to perform special moves like Zangief’s ‘Double Full Circle’ input for his Super Art 3.

Dynamic Controls

The Dynamic control scheme is meant for an audience that wants to press buttons and see fancy moves happening on-screen. However, it is not recommended for new players. The game selects the attacks automatically and spams them, which can lead to players missing out on the experience of learning the nuances of Street Fighter.

I’m a new player. What controls should I pick?

If you’re new to fighting games and wish to play Street Fighter 6, we recommend the Modern control scheme because it is easy to use and execute. However, if you feel limited by the control layout, we suggest switching to the Classic scheme.

We hope this guide helps clarify the differences between the control schemes. If you’re still unsure about which control scheme to use, check out our full review for more information.
