The latest trailer for Digital Mind Games’ upcoming 2D metroidvania-style Souls-like game, The Spirit of the Samurai, promises a unique dark fantasy experience that players won’t soon forget. Though the game features gruesome fighting and extremely bloody battles, it also includes some poignant touches like fluffy animal companions that add a respite to its darker, twisted themes.

During the Future Games Show Summer Showcase, Digital Mind Games unveiled a one-minute trailer that gave players a glimpse of the game’s protagonist samurai and his spirit friends, including the fox guide Kitsune and the warrior cat Chisai. Together, you’ll journey through dungeons, caves, and cemeteries while facing off against hordes of Tengus and other horrific monsters. However, the most terrifying creature in the game might be the humanoid spider, which has a jaw that unhinges like a snake.

Despite its gruesome content, it’s impossible to deny the stunning beauty of The Spirit of the Samurai’s unique art style. The game features stop-motion animation that gives its dark, twisted world an eerie, otherworldly feel that’s sure to impress players.
