F1 23 Review

After nearly a billion kilometers traveled, it’s time for another installment of the Formula 1 game series. Despite the vast distances I’ve driven in this series over the years, Codemasters never fails to deliver an enjoyable experience, and F1 23 is no exception. With improved handling for the new-era cars and the addition of the next chapter of the Braking Point story mode from F1 2021, there’s plenty to keep players engaged. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect from F1 23.

The Evolution of the Cars

The sweeping regulation changes in the previous season introduced new F1 cars that were visually stunning but also the heaviest in the sport’s history. In F1 22, handling these bulkier cars proved challenging and unpredictable. However, F1 23 has made significant improvements in drivability. The new-era cars feel more cooperative, offering better grip and stability, especially when navigating tight corners and kerbs. Even players using a game pad will find the controls intuitive and responsive. F1 23 truly excels in providing an enjoyable experience, whether you’re using a wheel or a controller.

Braking Point 2: A Compelling Story

Braking Point 2 continues the story introduced in F1 2021 and adds a fictional eleventh team called Konnersport to the grid. This new addition brings more substance and higher emotional stakes to the story. The focus is no longer solely on rookie Aiden Jackson and retiring driver Casper Akkerman; the spotlight now includes the whole Konnersport team, their rivalries, and conflicts. The unexpected developments and multiple perspectives make Braking Point 2 a standout feature of F1 23.

Mix of Scenarios and Challenges

Similar to the original Braking Point, Braking Point 2 presents players with a mix of scenarios and challenges to complete as different characters in the story. Some events are full races, while others require you to achieve specific objectives, such as finishing ahead of certain drivers or salvaging your position after setbacks. Overachieving in these challenges can earn bonus objectives, allowing players to unlock new responses and progress within the story. The structure of Braking Point 2 brings variety and provides clear goals for players to strive for.

A More Engaging Experience

Braking Point 2 features improved cutscenes and facial performance capture, resulting in a more immersive storytelling experience. While the scripted interview sequences are cleverly executed, adopting a documentary-style approach for the dramatic scenes could have added further depth. Additionally, it would have been beneficial to include the player’s chosen team from the original game to enhance immersion. Nevertheless, Braking Point 2 still stands out as an engaging and enjoyable mode within F1 23.

Introducing F1 World

F1 23 introduces a new mode called F1 World, which serves as a standalone career mode. In F1 World, players complete daily, weekly, and seasonal goals and races to earn rewards and upgrade their F1 World car. While the mode offers a more accessible way to experience F1 action in shorter bursts, the upgrade loop may not appeal to all players. Parts and performance boosters with eccentric effects create a mobile game-like tone that may not resonate with everyone. Fortunately, traditional career and My Team modes are still available for those who prefer a familiar experience.
