BioWare has recently announced that Broadsword, a studio specializing in online games, will be taking over active development of the popular MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR). Despite the change in development teams, BioWare assures fans that the current content plans for the game will remain unchanged.
In a statement from BioWare’s general manager, Adam McKay, he expressed his pride in SWTOR’s status as the longest-running live service Star Wars game. McKay stated, “We’re enormously proud of the work the team has done in creating, expanding, and maintaining this incredible game.” He also assured players that the transition to Broadsword means that they can continue to enjoy the SWTOR experience they know and love. As an added bonus, BioWare revealed that there are more updates in store for SWTOR, however, the details have yet to be disclosed.
While the majority of the current SWTOR team will be joining Broadsword to continue their work on the MMO, not all roles have been retained. McKay acknowledged the difficulties in making these decisions, saying, “This is the hardest part of this transition, and these decisions were not made lightly.” BioWare is committed to supporting the affected team members in finding new opportunities within EA.
The finalization of the deal between BioWare and Broadsword, which began in June, is expected to be completed by the end of the month. Broadsword, known for their work on games like Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot, has a team that includes Rob Denton, who previously worked on SWTOR. Despite the change in development, EA will continue to be the game’s publisher.
