ININ games is bringing the limited edition Ray’z Arcade Chronology to Europe. This release includes two different compilations: the Ray’z Arcade Chronology and the RayStorm X RayCrisis HD Collection. However, the latter only includes the HD touchups of RayStorm and RayCrisis, omitting RayForce from the lineup. This decision has left fans confused and questioning the purpose of this nerfed edition.
Strictly Limited Games previously released a physical version of the Ray’z Arcade Chronology that quickly sold out. This edition contained all three titles and an exclusive prototype RayForce sequel called R-Gear. Unfortunately, ININ’s digital release does not include R-Gear, which disappoints fans.
Despite these shortcomings, the Ray’z Arcade Chronology is a well-packaged collection thanks to M2’s expertise. The presentation is excellent, with well-designed menus and informative screens. The collection includes five versions of three games, with both original and new high-definition versions of RayStorm and RayCrisis. M2’s upscaling work is impressive, making the original versions pale in comparison.
As for RayForce, City Connection released a port of the Sega Saturn game earlier this year. However, M2’s version is considered superior due to its arcade authenticity and minimal latency. Players can experience RayForce in its true form on the Switch with this collection.
RayStorm, the 1996 arcade sequel, maintains the action in 2D but enhances it with stunning 3D polygon graphics. The game offers two different ships and features a fantastic soundtrack. It may even be considered the best game in the series by some players.
RayCrisis, the prequel to the first game, is the most unique entry in the series. It introduces new gameplay elements and a more intricate scoring system. The game is visually busy and has an angled perspective, providing a distinct challenge for players.
Overall, the Ray’z Arcade Chronology is a solid collection of the Ray series. It features accurate arcade ports, exceptional soundtracks, and captivating gameplay. The minimal lag and HD upscaling add to the overall experience. However, the lack of training modes and historical bonuses prevent it from being the ultimate package for fans.
