Santaolalla Hints at Improved Version of The Last of Us Part II for PS5
Following the success of The Last of Us Remastered on the PlayStation 4, it appears that its sequel may be receiving a similar treatment for the PlayStation 5. Series composer Gustavo Santaolalla recently hinted at a potential upgrade for The Last of Us Part II on the PS5.
Santaolalla’s Implication
During a guest appearance on a Blender podcast, Santaolalla discussed the game. According to Vandal, the acclaimed composer mentioned the existence of an “improved version” or “versión mejorada” of the sequel. He suggested that players may have the ability to influence the different versions of songs, perhaps referring to his cameo in The Last of Us Part II, where he can be found playing the banjo in Jackson. However, Santaolalla did not provide any further details at this time.
Potential PS5 Upgrade
While Naughty Dog has not officially announced a PS5 upgrade for The Last of Us Part II, there is a precedent for the developer upgrading and porting its games. The original Last of Us was remastered for the PS4, which received updates for the PS4 Pro. In 2020, the remaster underwent another update to improve load times, and it was completely remade for the PS5 in 2022. Additionally, the game was ported to PC, although it experienced some technical issues at launch. The Last of Us Part II received a boost when it was updated to run at 60 frames per second on the PS5.
Considering this history and the ongoing success of The Last of Us and its sequel, particularly with the upcoming HBO series, it is possible that a more substantial PS5 upgrade, as well as a PC port, for the divisive second chapter is currently in development. Sony has also demonstrated a willingness to release premium PS5 upgrades for games like Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Death Stranding Director’s Cut. There have even been rumors of a PS5 remake of Horizon Zero Dawn.
