The Clock Tower Series Gets an International Re-Release
The horror game series, Clock Tower, is beloved by fans, but the first game has remained exclusive to Japan. However, that is about to change as the 1995 classic is getting a modernized re-release for international audiences.
A Common Misconception
Contrary to popular belief, the Clock Tower game that was released on PlayStation in the West in 1997 was not the first game in the series. In Japan, it was known as Clock Tower 2. The actual first game, which American audiences never had the chance to play, debuted on Super Famicom (SNES). It follows the story of Jennifer Simpson, an orphan adopted by the Barrows family. Her peaceful life takes a dark turn when she discovers that a murderous stalker known as the Scissorman is haunting their mansion. As a point-and-click adventure, players navigate the game by using a mouse cursor to guide Jennifer, solve puzzles, find clues, and evade the Scissorman. The game also features multiple endings. Clock Tower is considered one of the pioneering survival horror games and has been ported to various platforms, such as PC and the Wii/Wii U eShops, multiple times in Japan.
Exciting Enhancements
The upcoming port of the first Clock Tower game is being handled by Wayforward, utilizing Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine. As revealed in the developer diary video above, the re-release will feature several improvements, including the game’s first official English localization (with multiple language options), a new animated intro, motion-comic cutscenes, and a brand-new vocalized theme song by Mary McGlynn, a renowned anime and Silent Hill singer. Additionally, the re-release will include an art gallery, save states, and other modern tweaks for an enhanced gaming experience.
Release Details
The re-release of Clock Tower is scheduled to arrive early next year for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Limited Run Games will also be providing premium physical versions of the game for collectors and enthusiasts.
