Figment 2: Creed Valley is an action-adventure game that takes players on a surreal and musical journey into the human mind. The developers wanted to create an immersive experience by incorporating sound design and music into the game’s environment. This includes elements like light bulbs blinking to the beat of the music, bridges made of piano keys that play when walked on, bosses singing their own theme songs during fights, and music that changes based on the player’s location and surroundings.
The game follows the protagonist, Dusty, the Courage of the mind, as he explores the deep corners of the subconscious. To make the surroundings feel more in tune with the universe, the developers analyzed the background music to find the loudest parts of the audio track. They then used this data to animate objects and determine when to play sound effects.
In the game, certain enemies have their own layer of music that adds to the base combat music. These enemies also attack on different beats and bars. The developers created a combat choreographer tool that allows them to sync up enemy attacks to the music playing. Lighter enemies can attack more frequently, while larger enemies attack on more significant beats to create a sense of impact.
The boss fights in Figment 2 are designed to be grandiose encounters, where the player faces off against Nightmares that physically manifest in the mind. These boss fights feature a change of scenery and music, and the player must engage in fights and solve puzzles to understand why the Nightmares have appeared. For example, one boss called The Jester symbolizes the fear of responsibilities piling up, and the player must defeat them and their protective Oddballs.
In Figment 2, every aspect of the game’s universe is musically attuned to its surroundings. The developers hope that players will enjoy the game and find success in saving The Mind from the nightmares that are wreaking havoc. Figment 2: Creed Valley will be available on Game Pass starting July 20th.
