Director Talks Success and Inspiration Behind Exoprimal
Director Takuro Hiraoka recently sat down with Xbox Wire to discuss the excitement surrounding the launch of Exoprimal on Game Pass.
Exoprimal introduces the unique concept of a small group of allies teaming up to battle massive hordes of dinosaurs. The game is available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows. It can be played with both Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
Launching alongside Game Pass ensured a strong player base from day one. Since its release on July 14, Exoprimal has already attracted over one million players to its exhilarating multiplayer experience.
We caught up with Director Takuro Hiraoka to discuss the game’s success, the inspiration behind the dinosaur vs. exosuit concept, and what’s next for the Exoprimal universe.
Creating a Universe
Hiraoka expressed his excitement over crafting the world of Exoprimal as a brand-new IP, combining his interests in dinosaurs and powered suits.
“Every day was exciting. We were able to try out a variety of challenging ideas such as combining PvE and PvP components into a single game mode,” Hiraoka said. “I distinctly remember how excited I felt seeing footage of a massive number of dinosaurs falling from the sky, as well as the experience of witnessing those dinosaurs and exosuits going head-to-head in-game. I thought to myself, ‘This is Exoprimal! How awesome!'”
The decision to focus on prehistoric dinosaurs was made early on in development and played a critical role in shaping the game’s story. The addition of futuristic exosuits as a means for humans to battle these creatures came from a desire to create an exciting in-game experience.
Thrilling Gameplay
Exoprimal offers players the chance to engage in epic battles with dinosaurs using flashy and exhilarating exosuit attacks. The controls are designed to be user-friendly, allowing players to quickly adapt to the fast-paced combat.
“The game may appear difficult at first glance, but don’t worry,” Hiraoka assured players. “The controls are user-friendly, and Leviathan will help navigate players through each mission in the wargames. Find an exosuit you like based on aesthetics or combat style. If you keep using exosuits that you like, you’ll be able to make a significant impact on the battlefield.”
Teamwork and Adaptability
One of the main focuses during the development of Exoprimal was teamwork and collaboration. Players are encouraged to work together to overcome challenges and complete missions. There is no specific composition of exosuit types required for success.
During combat, exosuits communicate through spoken cues, allowing players to understand their teammates’ actions and adjust their gameplay accordingly. Signal pins and stamps are also available to quickly relay information to allies.
Unique Experiences
Exoprimal offers a unique experience with ever-changing gameplay. Maps, missions, and enemy encounters vary with each playthrough, requiring players to adapt their strategies.
Hiraoka explained, “One feature we wanted to explore when developing Exoprimal was providing players with a unique gameplay experience in every match. The experience of collaborating with teammates to take on and overcome challenging obstacles in unpredictable settings offers added levels of enjoyment and accomplishment to the Capcom-style action of the game.”
The Future of Exoprimal
With the success of Exoprimal, fans can look forward to potential expansion of the game’s universe in the future. Hiraoka revealed that if they receive positive feedback from players, there may be opportunities to further explore the world of Exoprimal and create more unique experiences.
“We put a lot of thought into building out both the gameplay and the world of Exoprimal… It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience,” Hiraoka said. “We hope future Exofighters will take the opportunity to witness hundreds of dinosaurs flooding the screen and experience the satisfaction of combatting them in Leviathan’s wargames. We’re sure you’ll love it!”
