Baldur’s Gate 3 has plenty of secrets to discover and a diverse range of memorable characters to recruit. However, you may overlook some of these characters or want to explore additional classes. This guide will show you how to recruit Hirelings in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Recruit Hirelings in Baldur’s Gate 3
Hirelings are available with various starting classes. If you have an available character slot, you can pay gold to add them to your group. However, there is one crucial requirement: you must pay Withers to generate Hirelings in your camp.
Withers is a unique NPC who joins your adventure at some point. As mentioned in our guide on how to respec in Baldur’s Gate 3, he will eventually appear in your camp even if you don’t actively search for him. However, you can add him to your team earlier in the game by finding him in the Dank Crypt. You can access the Dank Crypt through the Ancient Door near the Overgrown Ruins waypoint.
To reach Withers, either pick the lock on the door or find the key. If you don’t have the key, picking the lock is the alternative. Once inside the crypt, head towards the north side, near the back of the chamber.
In this chamber, you’ll find several enemy corpses scattered around a balcony area facing a stone statue. Make sure to check each body and loot any weapons you find. There’s also a room on the left side with valuable items. When ready, make your way to the main room’s back left side, behind the statue. There, you’ll find a button on the wall. Activate the button to open the door.
As soon as you open the door, the previously lifeless enemy corpses will come to life and attack. These enemies primarily use projectile magic but have low health. You should be able to eliminate them with ranged attacks. Once you defeat the last enemy, search the room and open the sarcophagus to meet Withers.
Answer Withers’ questions, and he will agree to meet with you later. Return to your camp and locate Withers near a small boat along the camp’s edge. Speak with him, and he will explain the services he offers. Initially, he may not provide the option to recruit Hirelings. You need to progress through the campaign for several hours before that option becomes available. Keep checking in with him periodically until it does.
