The Strategy Behind using Paratroopers in Hearts of Iron 4
When it comes to winning the Second World War in Hearts of Iron 4, strategic thinking and planning are essential. However, there are tactics that can give players an instant advantage over countries without air forces.
One such tactic is the use of paratroopers, allowing players to deploy troops directly onto enemy ports, victory points, and strategic locations.
While some players view the use of paratroopers as cheating, it actually requires skill to effectively utilize these powerful troops.
In this guide, we will explore how to use paratroopers in HOI4 to strategically drop them behind enemy lines and force a country to surrender in less than a week.

How to Use Paratroopers in HOI4
In order to utilize paratroopers, they must first be unlocked.
To unlock paratroopers in Hearts of Iron 4, navigate to the Infantry tab and research them. Look for them under the Special Forces section, and dedicate at least 140 days to learn about them.
Once unlocked, HOI4 will provide a paratrooper template in the Recruit & Deploy tab.
It’s important to manage the number of Special Forces already deployed to ensure the ability to use paratroopers effectively. Adjust the cap limit as needed and produce them accordingly.
Once a few paratrooper divisions have been recruited and deployed, they can be combined to form an army by selecting them and pressing the man silhouette with the green + symbol at the bottom of the screen.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to prepare and execute an aerial invasion using paratroopers in HOI4:
- Select the army with paratroopers.
- In the missions tab, click the parachute icon to set the starting and landing points for the paratroop order.
- To initiate the plan, click the green arrow above the general’s head.
It’s worth noting that a minimum of 50 transport planes is required to choose a starting location for the paradrop mission.
Furthermore, paratrooper divisions must solely consist of paratroopers – including tanks or artillery will prevent them from participating in paradrop operations.
