It’s hard to believe, but No Man’s Sky is now seven years old. To commemorate this milestone, developer Hello Games has released a video retrospective and a small teaser for the game’s upcoming update. While details are scarce for now, fans can at least get a glimpse of what’s to come.

No Man’s Sky technically celebrated its birthday on August 9th, but Hello Games’ festivities were delayed for some reason. Studio boss Sean Murray has taken the opportunity to reflect on the past seven years of updates, which have transformed No Man’s Sky from a rocky start to the incredible sci-fi experience it is today. Time seems to have flown by, and it’s astonishing to see how far the game has come.

Murray shares, “Seven years ago…we watched players all over the world begin to explore the universe we had created. I can’t describe what that felt like. It was already the culmination of five previous years of very hard work for our tiny team.”

“We knew this was the start of a journey, but never expected what a wild ride it would be. I’ve been working on this game for nearly a third of my life, and it’s been more successful than we ever planned or dreamed. It hasn’t always been easy, but the thing that has been our guiding star throughout has been the players and the community. Behind every update, every video, every feature and line in a patch note is a team that cares so deeply for this game.”

With a total of 27 named updates so far, No Man’s Sky has continuously expanded its content, introducing engaging features like base building, farming, multiplayer, VR support, and much more. The game has evolved into a truly extraordinary experience. However, 2023 has been a relatively calm year in terms of major updates. Nonetheless, Hello Games wants to assure its players that they have more in store. At the end of the anniversary video, a small hint is dropped for No Man’s Sky’s upcoming update, officially titled Echoes.

While it’s unclear what Echoes will entail based solely on its name, Hello Games has previously hinted at a deeper storyline and future updates tied to the corruption spreading across planets in the game’s galaxy. So, expect more surprises and mysteries to uncover in this space exploration adventure.

Murray concludes with, “There is still a lot we want to try, so much we are still excited for. The next step on that journey is not far off. We’ll have more to share on Echoes with travellers very soon… Our journey continues. Thank you so much for your support.”
