Feeding Animals in Stardew Valley: Simplified Guide
Feeding animals in Stardew Valley should be a simple task, right? Well, the game’s developer, ConcernedApe, has made the process more complicated than it needs to be, leaving new players scratching their heads. So, let’s break it down.
To feed animals in Stardew Valley, you’ll need a Silo to deposit Hay, which you can then give to your animals. But here’s the catch: you can’t interact directly with the Silo to get the Hay. So, how do you solve this puzzle?
Getting Hay Out of the Silo in Stardew Valley
If you want to get Hay out of the Silo, you’ll need to interact with the Hay Hopper inside the Barn/Coop. It’s a brown container on the north side of the building, and pressing and holding the Do Action button (right-click on PC) will extract Hay from the Silo into your inventory. Now, you can place the Hay on the feeding trough nearby or store it in a chest for later use.

How to Get Hay Out of Silo in Stardew Valley
If you don’t have a Barn or a Coop in Stardew Valley, there’s no direct way to get Hay out of the Silo. When you interact with the Silo, you’ll only see how much Hay you’ve deposited inside.
To actually get the Hay out of the Silo, you’ll need to interact with the Hay Hopper, the brown container on the north side of the building. Press and hold the Do Action button on the full Hay Hopper to extract Hay from the Silo and into your inventory. From there, you can place it on the feeding trough or store it in a chest. It’s also recommended to empty the Silo regularly to make space for new Hay, so you don’t lose any when cutting grass in the future.
How to Get Hay Out of Hay Hopper from Deluxe Barn/Coop
In Deluxe Barns/Coops, the Hay Hopper works differently. Since the trough gets auto-filled with Hay when you upgrade the Barn or Coop to Deluxe, you can no longer get Hay from the Hay Hopper. This may pose a problem because a Silo can only hold 240 Hay, and you can’t move the Hay anymore.
However, there’s a solution. To get Hay from the Silo in Deluxe Barns/Coops, you need to blow the Hay in the feeding trough using a bomb. This will allow you to withdraw Hay from the Hay Hopper again because the animals still need food. The same method applies if you have a spouse who fills the trough for you. Although their intentions are nice, you’ll have to destroy their work with a bomb to remove all the Hay from the Silo using the Hay Hopper.
