How to Dive Underwater in FFXIV
Veteran players of FFXIV can sometimes forget how to dive because it’s not always necessary in the game’s story. But don’t worry if you can’t remember how to dive, it happens to the best of us.
The first step to diving in FFXIV is to reach the Stormblood MSQ “In Soroban We Trust”. Completing this quest will teach you how to dive.
To dive in FFXIV, follow these controls: press CTRL + spacebar on PC, press the circle button on PlayStation, or press B on Xbox. Remember, you can only dive in diveable water.
If these controls don’t work for you, it’s possible that your key mapping is different. Check your Control Settings to see what “Descend” is set to.
Unlock Diving
In order to unlock diving in FFXIV, you must complete the Stormblood quest “In Soroban We Trust”. This quest is available at level 63 in the Ruby Sea.
After visiting the underwater city of Tamamizu, which is an air pocket under a dome, you will be able to dive underwater later on during the quest.
Completing “In Soroban We Trust” also rewards you with the emote “Water Flip”, allowing you to perform cool flips underwater. Simply type /waterflip in chat to use it.
The quest itself is relatively simple, involving talking to a few NPCs and watching a cutscene. Just be aware that there is a brief tutorial on diving after completing the quest.
Underwater Tips
- Mount Up – Riding a mount underwater is faster than swimming without one. You can even transition from flying to swimming if you have flying unlocked in the area.
- Sprint – Using the sprint ability underwater changes your swimming style and increases your speed. It’s faster than normal swimming but slower than using a mount.
- No Combat – There is no combat underwater, so the fish you see are purely for visual enjoyment.
- Gather and Explore – Underwater areas often contain unique items that you can gather. Bring out your gathering tools and search for them.
What Water Can You Dive Under?
Generally, large and deep bodies of water in FFXIV are diveable. However, not all large bodies of water are suitable for diving.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a foolproof way to determine which waters can be dived in without trying them out.
In the base game, A Realm Reborn, there are only a few areas where diving is possible. Heavensward also has limited diveable waters, while diving pools are primarily found in Stormblood and beyond.
Now that you know how to dive in FFXIV, go and explore the underwater depths of the game! If you have a favorite body of water to explore, feel free to share it in the comments!
