Volition Games Shuts Down Following Embracer Group Restructuring
Volition Games, known for franchises like Saints Row and Red Faction, has announced that it is shutting down its operations immediately. The news was first reported on X.com, where several employees shared that they had been laid off and that the studio was ceasing to exist. The closure is a result of Embracer Group, the Swedish holdings company that acquired Volition in 2018, undergoing a company-wide restructuring. Here’s what Volition had to say in their farewell statement:
“The Volition team has proudly created world-class entertainment for fans around the globe for 30 years. We’ve been driven by a passion for our community and always worked to deliver joy, surprise, and delight.
This past June, Embracer Group announced a restructuring program to strengthen Embracer and maintain its position as a leader in the video game industry. As part of that program, they evaluated strategic and operational goals and made the difficult decision to close Volition effective immediately.
To help our team, we are working to provide job assistance and help smooth the transition for our Volition family members. We thank our customers and fans around the world for all the love and support over the years. You will always be in our hearts.” – Volition Games
Embracer’s restructuring comes after the failure of a proposed $2 billion partnership with Savvy Games Group, which pulled out of the deal in May. This caused Embracer’s share value to plummet, leading the company to implement cost-cutting measures. Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors outlined the company’s plan to become “leaner, stronger, and more focused” in an open letter. Unfortunately, Volition has become one of the casualties of this restructuring.
Saints Row: The Third Remastered
Volition’s closure comes after 30 years of being a prominent studio in the industry. They achieved success with franchises like Red Faction and brought innovation to the open-world genre with the Saints Row series. However, the studio faced difficulties in recent years. Their game Agents of Mayhem received a lukewarm reception, and their latest release, the Saints Row reboot, underperformed in sales. With Volition’s closure, the future of these beloved franchises remains uncertain.
Despite their recent challenges, Volition has left a lasting impact on the gaming industry. We’d like to hear from you – what is your favorite Volition game? Share your memories in the comments below.
