Puzzle games continue to thrive on mobile platforms, attracting millions of users with their engaging and intellectually stimulating gameplay experiences. According to a report by Sensor Tower, the genre has achieved a remarkable 50 billion all-time downloads and generated a whopping $42 billion in revenue.
The Popularity of Swap Puzzle Games
Among puzzle subgenres, swap puzzle games like Candy Crush and Royal Match have emerged as the most popular, with a staggering eight billion downloads, accounting for 16% of the total. These games have also generated $25 billion in lifetime revenue, making up 59% of the total.
From January 2022 to May 2023, swap puzzle games experienced an 8% increase in downloads and a 6% increase in revenue, indicating their continued popularity among mobile users.
Growth in Pair and Real-Time Puzzles
Pair puzzle games also saw significant growth during the same period, with a 47% increase in revenue and a 14% increase in downloads. However, merge puzzle games showed mixed results, with a 28% increase in revenue but a 28% decline in downloads.
Real-time puzzles saw the strongest growth, with a remarkable 103% rise in downloads and a 64% rise in revenue between January 2022 and May 2023. This growth can be attributed to popular titles like Tetris and Traffic Jam Fever, which garnered millions of downloads and generated substantial revenue.
Key Success Factors
The top three puzzle games during the analyzed period were Candy Crush Saga, Gardenscapes, and Homescapes. These games owe their success to diverse monetization strategies and meta features such as levels, narrative, and social aspects. All ten games in the top rankings offer currency bundles, live ops, and loot boxes, with the exception of Line: Disney Tsum Tsum and Toy Blast, which offer starter packs.
Only two games among the top ten, Line: Disney Tsum Tsum and Royal Match, do not include ads. None of the remaining eight games provide users with the option to remove ads.
Regional Trends and Market Potential
Swap puzzle games dominated the puzzle genre in all four regions analyzed by Sensor Tower: China, Japan, Europe, and the USA. China proved to be the most lucrative market for these games, accounting for 83% of puzzle game revenue in 2022. Europe, Japan, and the USA followed suit with 71%, 53%, and 58% of puzzle game revenue, respectively.
While the casual product model remains popular in the market, experiencing over 32.9 billion lifetime downloads and generating $41.3 billion in lifetime revenue, the period from January 2022 to May 2023 saw a decline in downloads and revenue in this category. On the other hand, the hybridcasual model witnessed substantial growth, with a 9.19% increase in downloads and a massive 429.67% rise in revenue.

Swap puzzle games, in particular, have proven to be highly popular, with their revenue contribution surpassing other subgenres.
