How to Use Advanced Defending in EA Sports FC 24
EA Sports FC 24 is the latest installment of EA Sports’ renowned football franchise. Formerly known as FIFA, the game brings several exciting additions, including Evolutions in Ultimate Team. One notable new feature is PlayStyles, which allows EA to accurately define a player’s play style. Among these PlayStyles, Advanced Defending stands out, offering players the opportunity to gain an advantage in defense. While it may take some time to get accustomed to, we have prepared a guide on how to use Advanced Defending effectively in EA Sports FC 24.
Changing to Advanced Defending
To switch to Advanced Defending, navigate to the game’s settings in the main menu. Scroll down to the gameplay section and locate the defending options. Change the setting from Tactical Defending to Advanced Defending. On the right-hand side, you can find detailed information about the changes this switch entails. In summary, Advanced Defending grants you the ability to choose the type of challenges you make in EA Sports FC 24 while reducing some of the defensive assistance provided by Tactical Defending.
If you’re torn between the two options, I wholeheartedly recommend Advanced Defending. Personally, I have often been frustrated when my player performs a different challenge than the one I intended. Advanced Defending allows me to select the precise standing challenge, such as a shoulder barge, that I desire. Hence, I exclusively utilize Advanced Defending in EA Sports FC 24.
Using Advanced Defending
To master Advanced Defending, you must familiarize yourself with the mechanics beyond the initial switch. It’s important to understand when and how to employ the various challenges available to you. The fundamentals of defending remain unchanged; you must continue to jockey opponents and apply pressure. However, with Advanced Defending, you gain access to new Seal Out challenges and shoulder barging techniques.

Admittedly, it may take some time to adjust to these nuances. However, if you actively participate in the defensive aspect of the game, rather than relying solely on AI assistance, you’ll quickly develop a natural understanding of these mechanics. When executing a shoulder challenge/barge or Seal Out, press the pass button (or assigned button as per your settings) and make your move. Other defending methods retain their previous button assignments, but the Stand Tackle button now functions exclusively for standard tackles without shoulder barging. I suggest maintaining close proximity to the player you intend to challenge and seizing opportunities to outmuscle them by utilizing the Seal Out button to gain possession.
Hopefully, this guide has equipped you with the knowledge necessary to effectively utilize Advanced Defending in EA Sports FC 24.
