Yuri Lowenthal Talks Voicing Smoke In Mortal Kombat 1

Yuri Lowenthal’s Funny Story About Playing Smoke in Mortal Kombat 1

In an interesting revelation during an interview with PlayStation LifeStyle, Yuri Lowenthal, the talented voice behind Smoke in Mortal Kombat 1, shared an amusing anecdote from his first session playing the character.

Before his work on Mortal Kombat 1, Lowenthal confessed that he wasn’t very familiar with the series. As a result, he unintentionally approached the game’s voice director with a question about “this new character, Smoke.”

Lowenthal humorously admitted, “It was very new to me in that I was not hugely into Mortal Kombat before. I mean, everybody knows Mortal Kombat. I had played Mortal Kombat, but for years, I had just not been paying attention. So I embarrassed myself when I got into the first session with Dominic Cianciolo, who wrote it and who also directed the voice sessions with me. I was like, ‘So, tell me all about this new character, Smoke.’ And he’s like, ‘Smoke’s not new. [Laughs]. We haven’t seen him in a while, but he’s not a new character. Let me give you some history.'”

Despite the title, Mortal Kombat 1 is actually the twelfth mainline installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise and serves as a reboot of the series following Mortal Kombat (2011). The game takes place within the new timeline established by Liu Kang after the events of Mortal Kombat 11’s story mode.
